What does the Colour Palette Extractor do?

A good palette is often hiding in a photo, a logo or a moodboard. This colour palette extractor analyses the pixels of an image you choose and groups similar shades together, keeping small but distinctive accent colours rather than only the most common ones. You get HEX and RGB values to copy into your design tool, plus a download as JSON or ready-made CSS custom properties.

How to use the Colour Palette Extractor

  1. Choose or drag an image (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or other formats your browser can display).
  2. Pick how many colours you want in the palette.
  3. Click any swatch to copy its HEX value.
  4. Download the palette as JSON or as CSS variables.

Your privacy

Your image is opened directly by your browser and analysed on a canvas on your device. It is never uploaded — MyToolsLab has no server that could receive it.

Frequently asked questions

How are the colours chosen?

The tool groups similar pixels together and then refines the groups with a k-means algorithm. Seeds are chosen to be far apart, so a small but vivid accent can still make it into the palette.

Why are the colours ordered the way they are?

Swatches are sorted by how much of the image each colour represents, from most to least. The percentage is shown under each swatch.

Does the tool work with transparent images?

Yes. Fully or mostly transparent pixels are ignored, so the background of a transparent PNG logo doesn’t dominate the palette.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The file is read by your browser and analysed locally. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works.
