What does the VAT Calculator do?

Value Added Tax (VAT) and similar sales taxes such as GST are usually charged as a percentage on top of a price. This VAT calculator works in both directions: add VAT to a net price to get the total a customer pays, or remove VAT from a gross price to find the amount before tax and the tax portion inside it. Choose one of the common rates or type any custom rate.

How to use the VAT Calculator

  1. Choose “Add VAT” if your price excludes VAT, or “Remove VAT” if it already includes it.
  2. Enter the amount.
  3. Select a rate or type a custom percentage.
  4. Read the net amount, VAT amount and gross total. Copy any figure with one click.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). At 20%, a £100 net price becomes £100 × 1.2 = £120.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). At 20%, £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net, so the VAT included is £20. Simply taking 20% off £120 gives the wrong answer (£96).

Which VAT rate should I use?

Rates differ by country and by type of product or service, and they change over time. The presets are common example rates only — check your tax authority’s current guidance for the rate that applies to you.

Is this tax advice?

No. This is a general arithmetic tool. For questions about registration, exemptions or what to charge, speak to an accountant or your local tax authority.
