Sales tax rates differ by state, county and city, and some items are taxed differently or exempt. This is a calculator, not tax advice.

What does the sales tax calculator do?

This sales tax calculator adds tax to a price before tax, or works backwards from a total that includes tax to find the original price and the tax paid. US sales tax is set by states and often by counties and cities too, so the rate differs from place to place, and you type in the rate that applies to you. The calculator does not look up or suggest rates.

How to use the sales tax calculator

  1. Choose “Add tax” if your price excludes sales tax, or “Remove tax” if it is a total that already includes it.
  2. Enter the amount. A decimal point or a decimal comma both work.
  3. Type the sales tax rate as a percentage, such as the combined state and local rate shown on a receipt.
  4. Read the price before tax, the tax and the total, with the formula, and copy any figure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the rate ÷ 100 to get the tax, then add it to the price. At 8%, a $50 item has $50 × 0.08 = $4 of tax, so the total is $54.

How do I find the price before tax from a total?

Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100). At 8%, $54 ÷ 1.08 = $50, so the tax was $4. Simply taking 8% off $54 gives the wrong answer ($49.68).

Why doesn’t the calculator know my state’s rate?

US sales tax varies by state and often by county, city and special district, and rates change over time. Rather than risk showing an out-of-date rate, the calculator asks you to enter it. Your state’s tax or revenue department publishes the current rates.

Is this tax advice?

No. It is a general calculator. Which items are taxable, exemptions, and how tax applies to shipping or discounts depend on where you are, so check with your state’s tax agency or a tax professional.
