What does the JSON Formatter do?

JSON is the text format most web APIs and configuration files use to store data. When it arrives as one long line it is hard to read, and a single missing comma makes the whole file invalid. This JSON formatter checks your JSON against the standard, points to the exact line and column of any syntax error, and then either indents it neatly (beautify) or strips the whitespace (minify) so it is as small as possible.

How to use the JSON Formatter

  1. Paste your JSON into the input panel, or load the example.
  2. Choose “Format” to beautify, “Minify” to compress, or “Validate” to check it without changing it.
  3. If there is an error, read the message and jump to the highlighted line and column.
  4. Copy the result or download it as a .json file.

Your privacy

JSON is parsed in your browser. API responses, tokens and configuration you paste here are never uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common JSON errors?

Trailing commas after the last item, single quotes instead of double quotes, unquoted property names, and comments. All of these are allowed in JavaScript but not in strict JSON.

What does minifying JSON do?

Minifying removes spaces, tabs and line breaks that aren’t inside strings. The data is identical, but the file is smaller — useful for network requests and storage.

Does formatting change my data?

Formatting only changes whitespace. If you enable “Sort keys”, object keys are reordered alphabetically, which doesn’t change the meaning of JSON but does change the order in the text. Very large numbers beyond JavaScript’s safe precision may lose digits, as in any browser-based tool.

Is it safe to paste API keys or private data?

This tool makes no network requests with your data — everything is processed in the page. As a general habit, though, avoid pasting live secrets into any website you don’t need to.
