Reading time is estimated at 225 words per minute.

What does the Word Counter do?

Essays, job applications, meta descriptions and social posts often come with a strict word or character limit. This word count tool updates as you type and shows words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time, so you can trim or expand your writing before you hit submit.

How to use the Word Counter

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Read the live counts above the editor — they update with every keystroke.
  3. Use the reading-time estimate to judge the length of blog posts and speeches.
  4. Clear the box when you are done. Nothing is saved.

Your privacy

Your text is counted in your browser and never leaves your device. MyToolsLab does not store, read or log anything you paste here.

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

A word is any run of letters or numbers. Hyphenated words such as “well-known”, contractions such as “it’s” and numbers such as “3.14” each count as one word, which matches how most word processors count.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters with spaces counts everything, including spaces and line breaks. Characters without spaces ignores all whitespace. Platforms with character limits — like SMS or social networks — usually count spaces too.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of 225 words per minute. Real speed varies with the reader and how technical the text is, so treat it as a guide.

Is there a limit on how much text I can paste?

There is no fixed limit. Very long documents (hundreds of thousands of words) depend on your device’s memory but will usually count in well under a second.
