What does the Markdown Editor do?

Markdown is a simple way to format text using plain characters: # for headings, ** for bold, - for lists. It is used in README files, documentation, note apps and many content management systems. This online Markdown editor shows a live preview next to your text, supports GitHub-flavoured extras such as tables and task lists, and lets you copy the Markdown, copy the formatted text, or download a .md file.

How to use the Markdown Editor

  1. Type or paste Markdown into the editor panel.
  2. Check the formatted preview as you write.
  3. Use the cheatsheet below if you need a reminder of the syntax.
  4. Copy the Markdown or the rendered text, or download a .md file.

Frequently asked questions

Which Markdown flavour is supported?

The editor supports CommonMark plus GitHub-flavoured Markdown extensions: tables, task lists, strikethrough and automatic links.

Can I use HTML inside Markdown?

Basic HTML is allowed, but the preview removes scripts and other unsafe content before displaying it, so the page can’t be harmed by anything you paste.

Is my document saved?

No. Nothing is stored online or in your browser, so download the .md file or copy your text before leaving the page.

What does “Copy text” do?

It copies the rendered preview as plain text, without Markdown symbols — handy for pasting into an email or a form that doesn’t support formatting.
